TLDR: Speed and current size are not indicators of scope and future impact.
Slow Growth Wins
It’s okay to build slow. Build wisely. Build thoughtfully.
Both in business and life.
Three examples below.
Chick-fil-A
In 1946 a ten stool restaurant, 1967 a 384 square foot food court concept in a mall, 1986 the first free-standing unit, and 2020 2,470 locations. That’s getting better before getting bigger.
Amazon
Look at the chart below.
Did Amazon hit mega-growth overnight? No, of course not.
Yes, they grew fast. But long-term growth was 22 years in the making. Imagine having a child, raising him, sending him to college, and seeing him graduate.
Twenty-two years!
Campus Outreach
Campus Outreach began in 1978 on one (read that again — ONE) campus, Samford University. It did not multiply for 11 years until CO Augusta starts in ‘89.
By ‘96, two more regions launch in Thailand & Memphis. Six regions launch by 2000, including Charlotte, Belo Horizonte, Greenville, Brisbane, Atlanta, Charleston
Twenty four more come online between 2000-2017. And now, roughly 2.6 million students have Campus Outreach laboring on their campus. That’s getting better before getting bigger.
My primary point remains.
Slow growth isn’t bad growth. And getting better is “how you get bigger”.
Not, as it may seem, the other way around.
